Startups & Entrepreneurship

This vertical tracks the signals from Buffalo’s emerging startup and entrepreneurship ecosystem. Covers 43North and its portfolio companies, Launch NY, incubators and accelerators, access to early-stage capital, founder demographics and diversity, venture activity in the region, and the fundamental question of whether Buffalo can build the conditions for culture, capital, and community that turn new ventures into lasting companies and keep entrepreneurial talent rooted in Western New York.

Why We Track This

43North put Buffalo on the national startup map but the question was always whether the momentum would last. Building a genuine entrepreneurship ecosystem takes more than a competition: it takes capital, mentorship, talent, and a culture that tolerates risk and celebrates building. Buffalo is making progress, but the region still faces real gaps in early-stage funding and a tendency to lose its best startup talent to larger markets. We track startups and entrepreneurship because new ventures are one of the clearest signals of economic optimism — and because the companies being started in Buffalo today are the employers, innovators, and civic contributors of the next decade.
